Eye Surgical Associates History

Eye Surgical Associates is one of Lincoln’s most experienced and respected ophthalmology practices, proudly serving patients, families, and referring doctors throughout the region.

Our story began in 1940, when Maynard Wood, M.D., became the first residency-trained ophthalmologist to practice in Lincoln. His son, Larry Wood, M.D., joined him in 1973, continuing a family tradition of thoughtful, skilled eye care. In 1979, Max Linder, M.D. joined the Woods, and the practice officially became Eye Surgical Associates.

As Lincoln grew, so did the practice. Across town, Gregory Sutton, M.D., and Margaret Sutton, M.D., established Sutton Skin and Eye Clinic. Eye Surgical Associates and Sutton Skin and Eye merged in 1989, bringing together doctors with a shared commitment to excellent patient care. That same year, Vincent Sutton, M.D., brother to Dr. Gregory Sutton, moved to Lincoln from Hastings and joined the practice. This combined history helped shape the comprehensive, multi-specialty practice Eye Surgical Associates is today.

In 1994, the practice moved to its current location at 1710 South 70th Street, next to Lincoln Surgical Center. This allowed patients to receive both clinical and surgical eye care in a convenient, coordinated setting.

Today, Eye Surgical Associates offers a wide range of medical and surgical eye care, including cataract surgery, glaucoma care, retina and vitreous treatment, corneal and refractive surgery, pediatric ophthalmology, adult strabismus, and oculoplastic and reconstructive surgery. One of the strengths of Eye Surgical Associates is the ability to offer coordinated specialty care within one practice. Whether a patient needs a standard evaluation, advanced diagnostic testing, medical treatment, or surgical treatment, our doctors work together to provide care that is thoughtful, thorough, and tailored to each patient’s needs.

For more than 40 years, Eye Surgical Associates has been part of the Lincoln medical community. We are grateful for the trust that patients and referring doctors have placed in us, and we remain committed to providing advanced, compassionate eye care for Lincoln and the surrounding communities.
